FILM SCREENING | MY COUSIN VINNY
(OR HOW I LEARNED TO LITIGATE AT THE MOVIES)
Wednesday, April 20, 2011 | 4:00pm
Location: Room 312, Fordham Law School

Join us for our closing event of the semester --- a screening of the legal movie classic, My Cousin Vinny!

In the only comedy to make the ABA Journal's Top 25 Greatest Legal Movies, Vincent “Vinny” Gambini (Joe Pesci) is a brash Brooklyn lawyer who only recently managed to pass the bar exam on his sixth try. He’s representing his cousin and a friend—two California-bound college students who are arrested for capital murder after a short stop at a convenience store in rural Alabama. Still, the rule of law prevails in the courtroom of Judge Chamberlain Haller (Fred Gwynne).

The movie packs in cinema’s briefest opening argument (“Everything that guy just said is bullshit.”), its best-ever introduction to the rules of criminal procedure, and a case that hinges on properly introduced expert testimony regarding tire marks left by a 1964 Skylark and the optimal boiling time of grits.

A CONVERSATION WITH DYLAN MCDERMOTT
Wednesday, April 6, 2011 | 8:00pm
Location: Time Warner Screening Room, One Time Warner Center (58th Street between 8th & 9th Avenue)

Film and stage actor Dylan McDermott is best known for his award-winning, critically acclaimed role as Boston criminal defense attorney Bobby Donnell in The Practice. For seven seasons McDermott portrayed an unusual fictional character in the annals of legal art: the lawyer who is morally anguished by what attorneys and law firms often must do in order to succeed. With Bobby Donnell as its senior partner, the law firm in this more reflective practice achieved victories but was always mindful of the difference between legal ethics and public morality.

HON. JED RAKOFF | "IP JARGON & OTHER JIBBERISH"
Thursday, March 31, 2011 | 5:00pm
Location: Room 430 B/C, Fordham Law School

The Hon. Jed Rakoff (D.J., S.D.N.Y.), will be giving a special talk on his upcoming commentary, "Down With Patentese," which will be published in Book 4 of the Fordham Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment Law Journal. Judge Rakoff's core theory is, in not so many words, patent law has too much of what Mr. T used to call "jibba jabba." It's oblique, isolating and makes the law more insular when the job of a judge is, to the extent possible, to articulate the law in plain English. It will be a short talk - only about 30 minutes with a little Q&A at the end - fun, brisk and engaging, and there will be coffee, cookies, etc., and, of course, all your IPLJ friends will be in effect.

FILM SCREENING | GASLAND

Location: Room 303, Fordham Law School
Co-Sponsor: Environmental Law Advocates

The Fordham Environmental Law Advocates in cooperation with the Fordham Media & Entertainment Law Society is proud to present a screening of the Oscar-nominated documentary Gasland.

"The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of "fracking" or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a "Saudia Arabia of natural gas" just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND. Part verite travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown, part showdown."

Bring your friends and see what all the fuss is about. Megan Klein, Esq., Associate Attorney of Earthjustice's Northeast Regional Office and Fordham Law School Grad '06, will be joining us after the screening for a discussion of the movie and natural gas extraction. Middle-eastern food and popcorn will be served.

Jeffrey Rosen will discuss how to preserve constitutional values in light of new social networking technologies, which have created online spaces where the U.S. Constitution itself may have limited reach.
